Stars can't shine without darkness.
What? That's not true at all.
What we perceive as darkness has nothing to do with a star’s shine. Those stars don’t care if we happen to be on the dark side of the earth at the moment. The stars aren’t shining for us to see. They are blazing away just as brightly and furiously all day and night.
We can take a lesson from them by not doing amazing things for the recognition or praise. Sure the stars are a great bonus to make our nights beautiful, but without us to appreciate them, they still burn.
I always want to claim credit for things I accomplish or help others to accomplish. I need to remind myself to allow them to have the entire spotlight they deserve without trying to steal some for myself.
I'm reminded of the words of the Tao Te Ching:
"The great leader works without self interest and leaves no trace.
When all is finished, the people say, "We did it ourselves."
Here's another cheesy quote that's actually useful:
"Even after all the time
The sun never says to the Earth,
"You owe me."
Look what happens with a love like that,
It lights the whole sky."
-Hafiz
Who cares if no one’s watching?
You're not doing it for them.
Keep burning.
