Call yourself an expert, because maybe you are

How many people label themselves as an "aspiring" (blank)? There are plenty of words to fill in.

  • Dancer
  • Singer
  • Musician
  • Writer
  • Film maker

For some reason people pursuing creative things often label themselves as aspiring. I don't know why anyone would willingly call themselves an amateur at anything. You either are or you aren't. Do or do not, there is no try.

If you've ever said you're an aspiring anything, why do you use that word? Seriously, leave a comment or send me a message if I'm wrong.

But it sounds like an excuse to me. An 'out' for when you don't find success you can say, "Well at least I tried. It was only a hobby anyway."

You say those things so it's easier to accept failure.

Are truly great creative people aspiring to be anything? Sure, maybe they have aspirations, but there's no reason to label yourself as a crappy version of whatever you're doing.

I want to be an expert at a lot of things.

A writer for example. I want to be an expert writer. And I write things now. Am I an aspiring writer? Yeah some might say so, but I call myself a writer.

I write, so I'm a writer. If I would add aspiring to that I'd feel like I wasn't any good and maybe I'm not any good, but for me to hit the post button, I have to believe that this is good and might help someone or at least entertain them. If I'm only aspiring to do anything I've already accepted that I'm no good and it probably won't work.

Sometimes you just need to be an expert at being silly in front of a room full of strangers.

Sometimes you just need to be an expert at being silly in front of a room full of strangers.

I'm going to start calling myself an expert at everything I WANT to be an expert at. I don't know if anyone will believe me but I don't care about them. I want to be the best for me, not for them.

Don't strive to be better than other people. Stop aspiring to do anything. Just do the thing. Believe you're the best.

Maybe you are.
